Same Size, Different Body: When the Jeans Stop Closing and the Scale Does Not Move

By the Metabolic Reset editorial desk · Reviewed September 2026 · 11 min read

The clothes are the first thing that tells you, and they tell you before the scale does. A pair of jeans that closed in March stops closing in September, and the number on the scale has moved by three pounds, maybe four. Nothing in that number explains what happened to the jeans.

This is one of the most common complaints women bring into a doctor's appointment after 45, and it is also one of the easiest to wave away, because on paper almost nothing changed.

Weight and shape are not the same measurement

A bathroom scale gives you one number for everything you are made of — muscle, bone, water, organs, fat. It cannot tell you which of those went up and which went down, and it cannot tell you where any of it sits.

Two things tend to happen at once in the years around menopause, and they cancel each other out on the scale. Muscle mass declines gradually, a process that starts earlier than most people realize and accelerates when estrogen drops. At the same time, fat storage shifts from the hips and thighs toward the abdomen.

Lose a little muscle, gain a little abdominal fat, and the scale barely moves. Your waistband is measuring something the scale is not.

Diagram contrasting energy being burned versus stored
The same meal can be treated as fuel or as storage. Which one dominates changes with age, sleep, muscle mass and hormones.

The advice that misses

The standard first suggestion is to eat less. It is the wrong first move for a specific reason: when muscle is already declining, an aggressive calorie cut accelerates the loss. You end up lighter on the scale and with less of the tissue that does most of your resting energy use — which makes the next attempt harder than the last one.

The women who describe "everything working until it stopped" are frequently describing the accumulated result of several rounds of that.

Which is where this stops being a body composition article and starts being about a notebook.

The woman who wrote the recipe says the internet left out two steps

You have almost certainly seen some version of it by now. A glass of water, a spoon of baking soda, first thing in the morning. It moved through TikTok in the summer and it has not really left.

Dana Whitfield is a formulator, not a physician, and she says the version circulating is hers — or rather, one third of hers.

"The baking soda part is real," she told us. "It is also the part that does the least on its own. Whoever clipped it took the first step and threw away the two that make the first one matter."

Her interest was not professional at first. It was her sister Rachel, who at 48 was doing everything correctly and getting the exact result described at the top of this page: the same size on the scale, a completely different body in the mirror.

"I was the thin sister," Whitfield said. "I told her to eat less and try harder. I want to be honest that I said that, because it is what most people say, and it is the thing that cost her four years."

Two columns, fourteen days

She stopped arguing and started writing things down. For two weeks she logged every bite both sisters ate, side by side, in two columns in a notebook.

The columns were close to identical. The bodies were not.

"That is when I stopped believing it was about the amount," she said. "The same food was doing two different jobs. In one body it was fuel. In the other one it was being put away."

The distinction that matters: the question is not only how much energy comes in. It is what the body decides to do with it once it is in — burn it now, or store it for a shortage that never comes. That decision is hormonal, and it drifts with age.

Before you read further, see how much of this sounds like you

Check the ones that are true this month.

  • Clothes fit differently while the scale says almost nothing changed
  • You eat roughly what you always ate and the result is not what it used to be
  • Hunger comes back an hour or two after a meal that should have held you
  • Afternoons are the hardest part of the day — energy and cravings both
  • The weight sits at the middle now, not where it used to sit
  • Something that worked at 35 does nothing at 50

Three or more is the pattern Whitfield built the recipe around. It is not a diagnosis of anything. It is a description of a body that has drifted toward storing.

There are four ways people go at this. Three of them fail this body.

Wake the cells. Protect the hormone. Flip the switch. In that order.

The three-part version, in her words:

Wake. Sodium bicarbonate — the baking soda everyone kept — addresses the acidic environment that makes cells sluggish about taking up and using energy. "It opens the door," she said. "It does not walk anyone through it."

Protect. Gingerol, from concentrated ginger, is the step almost nobody sees. Your body makes GLP-1, the same satiety hormone the injections imitate. It also makes an enzyme called DPP-4 that takes GLP-1 apart within minutes. Slow that enzyme down and the signal you already produce survives long enough to reach the brain.

Flip. Berberine acts on AMPK, the switch that decides between storing energy and spending it. "Wake and Protect set the table," Whitfield said. "Flip is the one that changes the answer."

Order matters, and so does dose. Which is the part that ends most home attempts.

She tried to make it in her own kitchen for most of a year

"I want to be very clear, because people ask me this every single day: I tried to do it at home first. For eleven months."

Ground ginger from a jar is a fraction of the gingerol you need and most of it never survives the stomach. Berberine is bitter enough that people quit in the first week, and it absorbs badly on its own. Baking soda in the wrong amount is unpleasant in an obvious and immediate way.

"Every ingredient did one job. None of them did it at a level you could feel. That is why the viral version disappoints people — not because it is fake, because it is a third of a recipe at a tenth of a dose."

So she made the finished version. It is called SlimSoda.

One measured scoop, one glass of water, once in the morning. The three steps in the proportion and the order she landed on after eleven months of failing at it in a kitchen.

What women say changes first

"I did not lose weight in the first week and I want to say that, because I nearly stopped. What I lost in the first week was the four o'clock crash. By the third week my rings were loose. The jeans took until the second month."

Marianne T., 52 — on her ninth week

"I have done every version of eating less since I was thirty. This is the first thing I have used where I was not counting anything and the waistband still changed. My husband noticed before I did, which has never once happened."

Deborah R., 47 — on her fourth month

Individual results vary, and both of these women describe the same order: the afternoon first, sleep somewhere after that, the clothes last. Whitfield says that order is the normal one and that expecting the clothes first is what makes people quit in week two.

The night she found the paper that explained it

Whitfield says the notebook gave her the observation and nothing else — she had proof the calories were not the variable and no idea what was.

What she eventually found was a body of work on incretins: the hormones released when you eat that tell the brain a meal happened. GLP-1 is the headline one, and it has a very short life because an enzyme called DPP-4 is built to take it apart quickly.

"That was the sentence that reorganised everything for me," she said. "My sister was not failing to feel full. She was feeling full for a much shorter time than I was, off the same plate. Every day, for four years."

The weight was only the part other people could see

What Rachel talks about now is not the number. It is that she stopped planning her day around the three o'clock hour. That she stopped bringing a cardigan to hide with. That her daughter's wedding photographs exist and she is in them.

"The clothes were the visible part," Whitfield said. "The part that mattered to her was that she stopped negotiating with her own body from two in the afternoon onwards."

"I want to be careful about this because I do not want to overstate it. My weight is down about nineteen pounds since March. But if you asked me what actually changed, it is that I do not think about food all afternoon. That is the thing I would pay for."

Joanne P., 55 — on her sixth month

Why the supply is sold the way it is

Whitfield says her own team argued with her about it. Selling single tubs would move more units and produce a great many disappointed women at week three.

"I would rather sell fewer people the amount that actually gives them a chance," she said. "The bundle is cheaper per tub and it is the only version I am willing to put the full guarantee on."

The Ceylon-grade ginger and the berberine are both supply-limited inputs, and the bundles go out of stock periodically for that reason rather than as a sales device.

What staying exactly where you are has already cost

The celebrity capsule version of berberine runs about a hundred dollars a month and covers one of the three steps. The injections run closer to a thousand and rent you the signal for as long as you keep paying.

And there is the quieter number: the jeans in the closet you are keeping in case, the two sizes of the same shirt, the four years Rachel spent being told to try harder.

Why the larger supply is the honest recommendation

"Rachel did not get her body back in two weeks," Whitfield said. "She got it back over about four months. If somebody orders a single tub and stops at week three because the scale has not caught up to the way they feel, I have wasted their money and their patience."

The multi-tub bundles exist for that reason, and they are the ones the guarantee is actually built around.

Use the whole supply. If nothing changes, you pay nothing.

Finish it — not one tub, the whole supply — and if your clothes fit the same way they do today, write in and the full amount goes back. Empty tubs are fine. That is the point of the offer.

What an ordinary Wednesday starts to feel like

Not a transformation photograph. Something smaller and considerably more useful.

You reach four in the afternoon and the thought of the biscuit tin does not arrive. Dinner is dinner, rather than the thing you have been negotiating with since two. You put on the trousers you have been avoiding, and you do the small check in the mirror, and there is nothing to check.

Then a month later somebody who has not seen you since the summer says something, and you realise you stopped keeping two sizes of the same shirt in the wardrobe.

Why most people fail at this, in Whitfield's own accounting

The questions that come up most

I take medication. Can I use this?
Ask your doctor before adding it, and do not stop anything you have been prescribed. This is a supplement that sits alongside your care, never instead of it.

Is it a subscription?
No. You choose a supply size, you pay once, and nothing renews by itself.

What does it taste like?
Faintly citrus, slightly warm from the ginger. It is a glass of water, not a shake — and it is not the taste of baking soda on its own, which is the part people quite reasonably dread.

I have tried supplements before and none of them did anything.
Most of them were doing one of the three steps, which is the same problem as the viral recipe. That is not a promise that this one works for you. It is the reason the guarantee is written the way it is.

The button takes you to the secure order page for SlimSoda. You pick a supply size, enter your details, and it ships from within the United States — usually arriving within a few days. You start the next morning: one scoop, one glass of water, before anything else.

Four months from now

You will be living one of two versions of this.

In the first one, the scale still says almost nothing, the jeans are still in the drawer, and the article you read in September was interesting and that was all it was.

In the second one, the afternoon stopped being the hardest part of the day somewhere in the first month, and the jeans closed somewhere around the fourth.

The difference between those two is one decision made tonight.
