The Two-Column Test

Eating the Same and Gaining Anyway After 40

By the Metabolic Reset editorial desk · Reviewed September 2026 · 11 min read

The sentence gets said in doctors' offices thousands of times a day and it is almost always met with a polite silence: I am eating what I have always eaten and I am gaining anyway.

The silence is because the sentence sounds impossible. Energy in, energy out. If the food did not change, the body should not have.

In 2024 a formulator named Dana Whitfield decided to find out whether her own sister was lying to her.

She was the thin sister, and she said the thing everybody says

Rachel was 48. She was walking every day. She was eating carefully. She was getting larger, month over month, and she had been for four years.

"I told her to eat less and try harder," Whitfield said. "I want that on the record, because it is what I believed, and it is what almost everyone tells a woman in that position. It cost her four years and it cost me my certainty."

So she stopped arguing and started measuring. For fourteen days she wrote down every single thing both sisters ate, in two columns, side by side.

The columns matched. The bodies did not.

Not approximately. Close enough that the difference could not carry the weight it was being asked to carry.

A handwritten two-column food log
Fourteen days, two columns. The experiment was designed to prove one sister wrong. It did the opposite.

"That was the end of the calorie argument in my house," she said. "The same food was being handled two different ways. In one body it was fuel. In the other it was inventory."

What decides which one a meal becomes

The body makes a call on every meal: spend this now, or store it against a shortage. That call is hormonal, and it drifts.

Two pieces of the drift are well described. Cells get slower about taking up and using the energy in front of them. And GLP-1 — the satiety hormone that tells your brain the meal happened, the same one the injectable drugs imitate — gets dismantled faster by an enzyme called DPP-4, so a meal stops counting sooner than it should.

A meal that stops counting early is a meal you are hungry after. Repeated daily for four years, that is Rachel.

Why this is not a willpower story: both sisters ate the same food. One of them had a satiety signal that lasted, and one of them did not. Discipline was never the variable being tested.

Run your own two columns, roughly

Check what is true for you this month.

  • You are eating roughly what you always ate and the result is different
  • You are hungry sooner after a meal than you used to be
  • Someone in your house eats more than you and stays the same size
  • The mid-afternoon is the hardest hour of your day
  • Cutting food works for a few weeks and then stops working
  • The weight sits at the middle now, wherever it used to sit

Four or more is the pattern the recipe was built around. It is not a diagnosis. It is a description of a body that has drifted toward storing.

Four options. Three of them fail this body.

Wake. Protect. Flip. In that order.

Wake is sodium bicarbonate — the baking soda step, the one that went viral by itself this summer. It addresses the acidic environment that makes cells sluggish. Alone, she says, you will feel nothing.

Protect is concentrated gingerol, which slows DPP-4 so the satiety signal you already make survives long enough to reach the brain. "This is the step the internet dropped, and it is the one aimed at exactly the sentence in the headline."

Flip is berberine, acting on AMPK — the switch between storing and spending.

Eleven months of failing at it in a kitchen

"People ask me every day why they cannot just mix it themselves. I tried. For eleven months."

Supermarket ground ginger carries a small fraction of the gingerol required and most of it does not survive the stomach. Berberine is bitter and poorly absorbed on its own. Baking soda in the wrong amount is unpleasant enough that most people never get to day three.

"One ingredient doing one job at a tenth of the dose is not the recipe. It is a rumour about the recipe."

So she made the finished one. SlimSoda.

One measured scoop into a glass of water in the morning. Three steps, correct proportion, correct order.

What women report

"What convinced me was not the scale. It was that I stopped thinking about food between lunch and dinner. I had forgotten that was even an option. The size came later and it came slowly."

Susan M., 53 — on her eighth week

"My husband and I eat the same dinner. For fifteen years that has been a running argument in this house because it did nothing to him and everything to me. That argument is quieter now."

Renee K., 50 — on her fourth month

Individual results vary. The order is consistent in both: appetite first, afternoons next, clothes last.

What she found once she stopped blaming her sister

The notebook settled the argument and explained nothing. The explanation came from the research on incretins.

When you eat, your gut releases GLP-1, the hormone that tells your brain the meal happened — the same hormone the injections imitate. An enzyme called DPP-4 exists to take it apart, quickly and by design.

"Two women, one plate of food, two different lengths of satiety," Whitfield said. "That is the whole gap the two columns could see and could not name."

The part that is not about the scale

Rachel's account of it now has almost nothing to do with weight. It is about not rehearsing an explanation before every appointment. About not being the person who is quietly assumed to be lying about what she eats.

"I was the one who assumed she was lying," Whitfield said. "Her own sister. That is the part I do not get to take back."

"Twenty-two years of being told I must be eating more than I say. The two-column thing is what made me try it, because somebody had finally written down what I had been describing to doctors since I was thirty-four."

Hannah C., 56 — on her seventh month

Why the supply is sold in bundles

Whitfield's team pushed for single tubs. She refused: a single tub ends around week four, which is where the appetite has changed and the mirror has not.

The bundles are cheaper per tub and carry the full guarantee. The concentrated ginger and the berberine are supply-limited inputs, so they periodically go out of stock.

What four more years of this costs

The berberine capsule sold as a shortcut covers one of the three steps at about a hundred dollars a month. The injections rent the signal at closer to a thousand.

And there is Rachel's number, which is four years of being told to try harder while the columns said she already was.

Why the bigger supply is the honest one

"Four months. That is what it took her. If somebody orders one tub and quits in week three, I have taken their money and given them a disappointment."

Finish the whole supply. If the scale does not move, you pay nothing.

Use all of it and if your clothes fit the way they fit today, write in and every dollar goes back. Empty tubs are expected — that is the point.

What it is like to stop having that argument

The specific relief is not on the scale. It is at the dinner table, where the same meal is on both plates and you are no longer doing arithmetic about it.

You stop thinking about food between lunch and dinner. You stop rehearsing the sentence for the next appointment. And then somewhere in the third or fourth month the clothes agree with you, which is the part you actually wanted and the part that always came last.

Questions that come up

I am on prescription medication.
Ask your doctor before adding it, and do not stop anything you are on. This goes alongside your care.

Is it a subscription?
No — one supply size, one payment, no renewal.

Do I have to change what I eat?
No, and the two-column notebook is the reason. The recipe was built for the woman whose eating was never the variable.

What if the scale does not move?
Finish the supply, write in, and the full amount goes back. Empty tubs are expected — that is what the guarantee is for.

Two versions of next spring

In one, you are still saying the sentence in the headline, and still being met with a polite silence.

In the other, you stopped saying it somewhere around the third month, because it stopped being true.
