Bloating vs. Fat
Flat in the Morning, Swollen by Noon: Two Different Problems
By the Metabolic Reset editorial desk · Reviewed September 2026 · 10 min read
You are flat when you get dressed. By lunch you are not. By evening the difference is visible enough that you have opinions about which top you can wear.
And then you wake up flat again, and the cycle repeats, and nothing about it makes sense next to a scale that has not moved.
The first useful thing to say is that two entirely separate things are commonly filed under the same word, and they need different answers.
Distension moves. Storage does not.
Distension is gas and fluid. It arrives over hours and it leaves overnight. If you are flat in the morning, the thing you are seeing at noon is largely distension — and the fact that it resets while you sleep is the clearest evidence you will get.
Storage is tissue. It does not reset overnight, it does not care what you ate on Tuesday, and it accumulates slowly enough that the clothes notice before you do.
Most women over 45 describing this are living with both at once, which is exactly why the advice they get is so scattered.
The quick test: if it is gone by morning, it moved. If it is there on a Sunday morning after a quiet week, it is not moving. The two need different approaches, and treating the second one like the first is how years get lost.
The part everyone gets wrong
Because distension is what you can see changing, it gets all the attention. People cut out food groups, buy elimination plans, remove bread. Sometimes the noon swelling improves.
The waistband still tightens over the year, because the second problem was never addressed. It just was not the one making noise.
What runs the second one
A meal arrives and the body chooses: spend this, or put it away. That choice is hormonal, and after estrogen declines it drifts steadily toward putting it away, and toward putting it away at the middle.
Two things drive the drift. Cells become slower to take up and use the energy in front of them. And the satiety signal from a meal — GLP-1, the hormone the injectable drugs imitate — is dismantled faster than it used to be by an enzyme called DPP-4, so meals stop counting for as long as they should.
Which of these is your week?
Check anything that is true most weeks.
- Flat in the morning, visibly not flat by evening
- The swelling resets overnight but the trousers got tighter over the year anyway
- You cut out foods, the swelling improved, the clothes did not
- Hungry again sooner than a meal that size should allow
- The mid-afternoon is your low point, every day
- The weight sits at the waist now in a way it did not at 35
The first three are the moving problem. The last three are the one that keeps the jeans in the drawer.
The recipe everyone half-copied
Dana Whitfield writes formulations for a living. She also wrote the morning routine that circulated all summer as "the baking soda trick," and she has been correcting the record ever since.
"They kept the one step that fizzes," she said. "Baking soda alone opens a door. It does not move anybody through it. And on its own it is not going to change what your body does with dinner."
She built it for her sister Rachel, 48, who was doing everything she had been told — less food, more walking — and getting steadily larger anyway. Whitfield spent two weeks writing down every bite both of them ate in two columns. The columns matched. The bodies did not.
Three steps, in order
- Wake — sodium bicarbonate. Addresses the acidic environment that makes cells sluggish about spending energy.
- Protect — concentrated gingerol. Slows DPP-4 so the satiety signal from a meal survives closer to the length of the meal.
- Flip — berberine. Works on AMPK, the switch that decides between storing and spending.
"Wake and Protect set it up," she said. "Flip is where the answer changes."
Why the home version does not get there
Whitfield spent eleven months trying to make it in her own kitchen before she stopped.
Jarred ground ginger is a small fraction of the gingerol needed and most of it does not survive the stomach. Berberine on its own is bitter enough that people quit inside a week, and it absorbs badly. Baking soda measured by eye is immediately unpleasant.
"That is why the version online underwhelms people," she said. "Not because it is fake. Because it is one step out of three at a tenth of the dose."
The finished version is called SlimSoda

What women describe
"The evening swelling was what I wanted gone and it did settle, but the thing I did not expect was that I stopped raiding the cupboard at four. The waistband change was the slowest part and it was also the one I actually wanted."
Lorraine H., 51 — on her tenth week
"I had done every elimination diet going. Bloating would improve for a month and the size never did. This is the first thing where the size moved and I was not removing anything from my plate."
Angela D., 46 — on her fifth month
Results vary. Both describe the same sequence Whitfield warns about: appetite and afternoons early, the clothes late.
The mechanism she went looking for
The two columns proved the food was not the difference and left her with no explanation at all.
What she landed on was the incretin system. When you eat, your gut releases GLP-1, which tells the brain the meal happened. An enzyme called DPP-4 dismantles it, by design, within minutes.
"When that enzyme outpaces the signal, meals stop counting early," she said. "You get hungry sooner, you store more of what arrives, and none of it is a discipline problem."
What actually improved, in order
Rachel's evening distension settled in the first few weeks. Her appetite steadied not long after. The size — the thing that had driven her to a doctor in the first place — moved last, and moved slowly.
"That order frustrates people and it is the order it happens in," Whitfield said. "Anyone promising you the opposite is selling you a fortnight."
"By evening I used to look four months pregnant and I am not exaggerating. That settled first. The dress size took until about month three and I had honestly stopped expecting it by then."
Bernadette L., 48 — on her fifth month
Why the supply sizes exist
Single tubs run out in the exact window where the slower problem has not moved yet. Whitfield's position is that selling them produces disappointment rather than customers.
The bundles are cheaper per tub and they are the ones the full guarantee is attached to. The concentrated ginger and the berberine are both limited inputs, so bundles do sell out periodically.
What the shortcuts cost
The celebrity berberine capsule is roughly a hundred dollars a month for one of the three steps. The injections are closer to a thousand and they rent you the signal for as long as the prescription runs.
Why she recommends the larger supply
"Rachel took about four months. If somebody buys one tub and stops in week three because the mirror has not caught up with how they feel, that is a waste of their money."
Use the whole supply. If nothing changed, you pay nothing.
Finish it. If your clothes fit exactly the way they do today, write in and the full amount comes back. Empty tubs are fine.
What the evening can look like instead
You get to seven at night and you are not choosing a top based on what it hides. You sit down after dinner without the small adjustment. The mirror at the end of the day looks approximately like the mirror at the start of it, which after a few years of the opposite is a strange thing to get used to.
And separately, slowly, the trousers from last spring come out of the drawer — which is the other problem, the one that never reset overnight.
The three ways this goes wrong
- Judging it on the swelling alone. The moving problem responds first. The problem that costs you clothing sizes takes months, and it is the one worth waiting for.
- Missing mornings. One scoop, daily, before anything else. Sporadic use is a different routine.
- Ordering one tub. It runs out in the exact window where most people are still deciding.
What people ask first
I take medication for something else.
Talk to your doctor before you add it and keep taking what you have been prescribed. This is a supplement, alongside your care.
Is there a subscription?
No. You pick a supply, you pay once, nothing renews.
I have already cut out gluten and dairy.
Then you have probably already improved the moving problem and confirmed it did not touch the other one. This is aimed at the other one.
And if nothing changes?
Finish the supply, write in, and every dollar goes back. Empty tubs are expected.
What happens after the click
The button opens the secure order page for SlimSoda. You choose a supply size, enter your details, and it ships from within the United States. It usually arrives inside a few days.
Two Aprils
In one, you are still deciding at seven in the evening which top hides it, and the trousers from last spring are still in the drawer.
In the other, the swelling stopped being a daily event somewhere in the first month, and the trousers came out of the drawer somewhere in the fourth.
